A Simple Trick for Working SmarterNot Harder
A Simple Trick for Working SmarterNot HarderA Simple Trick for Working Smarter- Not HarderWork smarter, not harder.People say it all the time and in a variety of situations, but have you ever wondered how you could actually take the old adage and make it practical? It seems like scientists had the same question- and came across an easy solution. Researchers at the University of North Carolina, HEC Paris, and Harvard Business School recently found that when participants in a study attempted a brain teaser and then wrote about their strategy and how they could better improve it in the future, they did 18% better on the test the second time around than the control group participants, who did no reflection at all.Additionally, these researchers found that reflecting on the lessons youve learned from a situation is just as effective as teaching someone else what youve learned. (Yes, it really is that simple)So, how can you apply these findings to your career? Try this After you finish a pr oject or at the end of every day, dedicate 10 minutes to writing down what you did well- and what could use improvement the next time. departure a journal or Word document, and just write how you feel. (Here are a few other benefits writing can have on your career.)For example, pretend you just gave your first big presentation in front of an audience. After you get over the initial adrenaline rush following your exit from the stage, take a couple minutes to write down how you think the presentation went, what you did well, and what you could improve upon for the future. Before your next public speaking gig, go over your notes, take your own advice into consideration, and presto- youve worked smarter and not harder.Photo of clean desk courtesy of Shutterstock.

Winning Interview Questions to Ask a Job Interviewee
Winning Interview Questions to Ask a Job IntervieweeWinning Interview Questions to Ask a Job IntervieweeIts time to fill that vacancy on yur team and the pressure is on to find a professional who personifies the key qualities you need. But how can you determine that from just an interview? What matters are the questions you ask. Here are 15 questions to ask interviewees that will give you insight into a candidates skill level and demeanor, so you can feel confident in your decision.1. What do you know about our company, and why do you want to work here?Youd think with the easy access to information online today, most candidates would do their homework, but thats elend always the case. Some applicants may not even know what type of business the company engages in. Ask this interview question and youll find out quickly who is sincerely interested in working for you - and who isnt.2. What skills and strengths can you bring to this ort? Did the interviewee blindly apply to your opening o r did they consider how they match your needs? This question can help you find out. Applicants should be able to think critically about how their abilities will benefit your team.3. Can you tell me about your current job? This is a great interview question to evaluate communication skills, while gaining insights into an individuals background that goes beyond the resume.Having trouble finding qualified job candidates? We can helpSTART HIRING4. What could your current company do to be mora successful? This inquiry can give you a sense of whether interviewees landsee the big picture at their organizations. It may also reveal why they really want to leave their current jobs.5. Can you tell me about a time when you had a disagreement with a boss or colleague and how you handled the situation? This is one of the more valuable questions to ask interviewees because youll get a sense of their conflict resolution abilities, personality and potential for future problems. What tone does the per son use when talking about the other people involved? Were they able to handle the situation described appropriately? Did they find common ground? Emotional intelligence is keenly needed in almost every job.6. Do you work best alone or on a team? What kind of work will the candidate be performing if theyre selected for the position? This question helps determine if theyre suited to the types of assignments theyll receive. Someone who enjoys solitary work and long stretches of uninterrupted time at their desk may not thrive in a position that requires collaboration or multi-tasking.7. Why are you leaving your current job? Does your job opportunityprovide an alternative to the factors (lack of professional development, management problems, etc.) that made them unhappy in their current role? If so, showcase those benefits. But keep an eye out for candidates with unrealistic expectations, and bear in mind that an employee who leaves an organization for petty reasons may not be a good lo ng-term fit for you.8. Whats your ideal work environment? Asking interviewees this question can help determine whether or not theyll flourish at your company. If your office has an open floor plan, for example, a candidate who prefers a private workspace may not be the best fit the reverse is also true.9. How would your coworkers describe you? This is another question that can help predict how an interviewee will work with the other members of your team. Understand the personalities of your current staff members and be on the lookout for a candidate who will complement those. For example, Type A employees may thrive with an assertive new team member, while this may prove challenging for quiet, introverted employees.10. How would your boss describe you? This may give you a sense of the candidates relationship with previous managers. Reliable? Prompt? Efficient? Keep in mind, though, who youre asking. The answer will be simply their opinion of what the boss might have said. Thats why its still critical to check references. Request a list of contacts and give former employers a call to hear how their impressions align with the candidates.11. Where do you see yourself in five years? A candidate who has professional drive and career aspirations is valuable. Look for someone who is engaged in their career and has clear goals, and consider mentioning how your organization can help them achieve those objectives. Finding a prospect who is interested in career advancement and sees opportunity with your company increases the chances that theyll be happy in the long run.12. Can you describe how you handle tight deadlines? Does your team frequently face challenging time constraints? Do you need someone who can work quickly and accurately while under pressure? Ask this question and youll at least get their opinion as to how they handle stress and whether they can keep up with the pace of work at your organization. You could also follow up by asking if theyve ever missed a d eadline and, if so, how they handled the situation.13. In your most recent role, was there a time when you had to overcome a significant challenge? Use this question to get a sense of an interviewees critical thinking and analytical skills. You should also pay attention to how the candidate describes their behavior when faced with a challenge. Did they struggle or did they come up with an action plan and see it through?14. Whats the most interesting project youve worked on in a past position? Ask this question to determine if the applicant would enjoy the work available at your company. Do the types of tasks they find fulfilling align with the job description for your position? Making sure employees find their work professionally satisfying is one of the most important factors in retention.15. Do you have any questions for me? Why Resume Examples Are Better Than Resume Templates
Why Resume Examples Are Better Than Resume TemplatesWhy Resume Examples Are Better Than Resume TemplatesWhen its time to create a resume, the first search most people make is for a vorlage. Thats elend surprising, resume templates are a quick fix, they tell you exactly what to do. If your goal is to save time, theyre perfect. But if your goal is to get hired, taking the time to look at resume examples and create something worthy of the job you want is the better bet.Resume examples vs. resume templates Resume examples and templates differ in their objective. While templates are used as a fill-in-the-gaps one-stop fix, resume examples are about giving people the freedom to build their own version of a successful resume. They differ in their approach. Templates are akin to when your older sibling does your homework for you while resume examples are when your tutor shows you how to do it. Building a resume with influence from successful resume examples will bring better results than inp utting your information into a resume template. The disadvantages of resume templates1. They produce carbon copiesResume templates lead the user towards producing an exact copy. When given a template, there is little-to-no room for you to make any additions or bring in individuality. Templates force you to input your details into a previously formed mold that might not be the best fit for you. Recruiters who constantly see the same resume come across their desk will begin to lose interest. Typically, a resume is looked at for less than six seconds. The worst thing you can do when trying to get noticed is fit in with the crowd. Anything you can do to catch the recruiters eye as theyre quickly skimming through hundreds of resumes will be an advantage. Templates prevent you from capitalizing on this advantage as you become one of many people that have used best marketing resume or something similar. 2. Theyre unnecessarily restrictive Resume templates tell you what should go on a resum e and dont give any debate to additional sections or the omission of others. In reality, there are very few instances where a resume needs a specific section. On top of that, who says that a section has to have a certain title? You might not have technical skills, you might have industry expertise and so on. Templates prevent you from going outside of the box and force you to paint-by-numbers in your resume building. Where recruiters favour creative thinking (practically everywhere), this is not the image you want to project. 3. They leave personality behind Templates are built to be one-size-fits all. By their very nature, theyre not personality or individuality-driven. Personality has been the driving factor in many people getting their jobs, however. Personality led to Sam getting hired at Spotify, Dean getting hired at , Louis getting hired at Hotjar, and more. Your personality can help you set yourself apart from competition more than experience, especially in oversaturated fie lds. Choosing to use a resume template as a quick-fix will cause you to lose that competitive edge. 4. Loss of flexibility The center of your resume should be you. When using a resume template, all decisions are left to the template maker. This means the font used, the number of sections, the type of sections, the type of content in those sections, and more are taken out of your control. Moreover, reworking a resume template with a strict format can be quite time-consuming. There are few avenues for you to personalize your resume when conforming to a template. Recruiters look for you to do three main things when assessing a resumeBe specific Be selfish Avoid clichs To satisfy those criteria, you do not need a resume template. In fact, using a resume template almost entirely guarantees you will do the opposite. Resume templates are generic to fit wide audiences, arent personalized (not selfish) and rely heavily on buzzwords and cliches. Every resume should be tailored specifically to the position youre applying for. Templates ignore this advice and hope that if you throw enough at the wall, something will stick. This isnt the case. 5. False sense of security If youre looking for a resume template, chances are youre not very confident in your ability to write your own. Resume templates can alleviate some anxieties as they claim to be the key to getting hired. Unfortunately, this is rarely the case. The issue with resume templates is they suggest there is one way to create a successful resume. The reality is quite the opposite. Using a resume template can put you on autopilot and prevent you from thinking critically on what youre including. Moreover, resume templates can include sections that you dont have a lot of experience with. If youre under the impression that this is the way resumes should be written, you can fall into the trap of padding your resume out with irrelevant and non-impactful information in these sections. This type of uniform thinking will lea ve a poor impression on the recruiter and will cost you opportunities in getting hired. The advantages of resume examples1. They provide inspiration Theres nothing worse than staring at a leer piece of paper with no idea where to go with it. Resume examples are great for showing you how someone has tackled this issue before and for giving you an idea of where you might take it to tell your story. In contrast to templates, resume examples give you the foundation you can build off of, not on top of. This allows you to craft a resume that shows who you are and what you have accomplished in a researched way that is true to you. Daniel built a customer support resume using s examples which got him hired at Intercom.2. LanguageResumes can differ from sector-to-sector. Public sector resumes, for example, differ substantially from private-sector resumes. Without seeing these specifics in action, we can struggle with the language expected by a recruiter and fall short of the mark. As opposed to templates, resume examples show the type of language used for industry-specific resumes in real-life scenarios. You get to see how real people have navigated their resume with this specific language how this has been successful in getting their job. Pavels data scientist resume gives an insight into how one may approach a data science resume and the type of language and needed to succeed in the field.3. They leave room for improvementUsed correctly, a resume example can show you trends in your field which can apply towards improving your resume. Alternatively, you can spot things that resumes in your area dont do and use that to stand out. They essentially provide a base from which you can apply your own style. Templates, on the other hand, are static and are very rarely updated as time goes on. Theres no way to get a real idea of trends in the area from them for this reason. Avery noticed that volunteering resume examples rarely quantify their achievements or relate them to the position theyre hoping to secure. They improved upon this in their own volunteer resume.4. They put you inside the mind of the recruiterReviewing others resumes gives you a look into the life of a recruiter. Scouring through example resumes shows you how you can come across to a third-party and what elements of a resume make it stand out to an individual person. If youre attracted to a resume example, chances are it will attract other people including the recruiter. Resume templates typically leave details out, have blank spaces or are half-formed. They dont show you what its like to be a recruiter being dealt fully-crafted resumes. On top of that, theres greater risk of erroneous details when crafting a resume using a template. If a template includes a certain section and this template claims that this is the way your resume should look youre forced to fill it out. However, this might not be the best decision for your individual situation. Where your template might suggest you need prior experience, you may have volunteering projects and so on. Sams career change resume is eye-catching and detailed. From reviewing her resume, we get to see what it would be like if we were recruiters reviewing our own and we get an insight into what things grab our attention most.Long live the resume example Overall, its clear that there is far more to be lost than gained when using a resume template. If youre seeking a guide on how to put your resume together, or even an idea of how someone has approached putting a specific resume together, resume examples are the way to go. Luckily, have a collection over several successful resume examples that span Tech, Customer Service, Medicine, Sales, Volunteering, and more.

Boost to green energy in Australia
Boost to green energy in Australia Boost to green energy in AustraliaPosted October 13, 2011, by Louisa Veidelis The Australian government has made a commitment to boosting renewable energy by funding two initiatives to develop renewable energy generation and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It was announced last week that the Rudd government would allocate $245m worth of funding to the Renewable Energy Demonstration Program, designed to accelerate the commercialisation of new renewable energy technologies for power generation in Australia. This investment is expected to lead to increased renewable energy generation from geothermal sources, wave technology, and a mini-grid project involving wind, solar, bio-diesel and storage technologies. Four companies Companies Petratherm, Geodynamics, Victorian Wave Partners and the Hydro-Electric Corporation will receive the funding boost. The government has also given $16.4m to 37 projects designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 38 0 00 tonnes per year. This makes up the third round of the $90m Green Building Fund initiative, which reduces energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by retrofitting commercial office buildings, according to Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research. Climate change is one of the greatest challenges we currently face and the $90m Green Building Fund is just one of the ways the Rudd government is responding to this challenge, says Carr. Australia is one of the highest greenhouse gas emitters in the industrialised world, per capita but that is something that will hopefully change. Hugh Sangster, a renewable energy engineer, believes that developing renewable energy sources will be key and says that In Australia we are looking for 20 per cent of our electricity to be produced from renewable power by 2020. Carbon Planet is a company which provides greenhouse gas, energy and life cycle analysis audits, and advises companies on how to reduce their emissio ns to offset their carbon footprint. According to Chairman Jim Johnson, the most overlooked area in terms of carbon footprint is the management of energy in Australian offices. Very few of the buildings in Australia are green. You flick one light switch on and 300 bulbs light up. It is the biggest and easiest thing for businesses to start adopting, says Johnson. Sustainability consultant Simon Carter says its easy for people to get involved in the sustainability sector, no matter where they work. I think the trick is for people to understand what role their particular sector is going to play in sustainability and then work out what role they, and their organisation, might play in that. Look at the big trends and see what it is about them that really inspires you, says Carter. Australians can also consider their individual contribution to environmental issues by looking at their personal water, waste, energy and recycling habits. According to Simon Carter, To me sustainability is about the way we live. Its about transforming our lifestyles to be more deeply grounded in our values, having a greater sense of purpose in our lives and greater relationships with others I see it as the strengthening of communities. The deeper I get into sustainability with clients and with other people I collaborate with, the more I learn about myself.Environmental ResourcesEnvironmental manager sample resumeEnvironmental manager sample cover letterCareer Insider StoriesShelley Lask - Body Positive Health & FitnessInterested in becoming a?Environmental ScientistSustainability OfficerEnvironmental ResearcherEnvironmental ConsultantPolicy OfficerPopular Career Searcheshow to become a judge in australiahighest paying jobs in australiabest job oriented courses in australiamaternity leave letter template australiaworking freelance in australiaEnvironmental CoursesBachelor of Engineering (Civil and Environmental) HonoursEnquire Online Enquire OnlineMaster of Environmental ScienceEnqu ire Online Enquire OnlineBachelor of Science (Environmental Management)Enquire Online Enquire OnlineLouisa VeidelisRelated ArticlesBrowse moreGreen power is good for jobsFor those who work in the energy sector, career opportunities and environmental values have long been at opposing ends of the spectrum, until now.EnvironmentalA lightbulb moment for Earth Hour participantsSaturday 29 March marks the 8th annual Earth Hour event, but are you in the dark about why youll be turning off the lights?Clean up Australia and boost your careerNo ifs or butts This weekend, help restore some of Australias beauty and boost your career while youre there.

6 things Tinder and job hunting have in common
6 things Tinder and job hunting have in common6 things Tinder and job hunting have in commonDoes Valentines day make you think of love or meeting The Right One? In the past, people used to meet in partie and have a lot of conversations before jumping into a relationship. Nowadays, there are tons of ways to meet people online. The face expressions were replaced with emojis and it takes no more than 3 online chats to become a couple.Ive never tried using Tinder, I perceive it as the Voldemort of the app store, casting spells over all the loners seeking love. Yet Ive always felt tempted to try it out. Id create a profile that would showcase my personality in the best possible light. I imagine Id throw a few lies here and there Im always in a good mood or something. The profile picture would be a cute selfie with a Mayfair filter, to hide all the imperfections nobody needs to know about. Id add other pictures, the ones that received the most likes on Facebook, to pretend that I always lo ok somewhat decent. Then just wait until the right-swipes start rolling in.Working in a company thats helping people with job hunting, I realized Tinder and job search have quite a lot in common After talking to my colleagues who used Tinder before, I outlined these 6 commonalities. A perfect Tinder profile can get you a new love, a great resume can get you a job you love1. One pictures worth a thousand wordsTheres a perfect photo for each situation and you should be aware of that context when creating both your resume and your Tinder profile. Im notlage trying to say that a selfie revealing your cleavage or your perfect abs are going to get you that job It might get you loads of right-swaps and Youre cute messages, but your employer might see it differently. On Tinder, its OK to use filters and pictures from travels with your friends just so you look like youre amazing to hang out with and you have friends. To leave a good impression on the hiring manager, your picture should be a clean headshot. Only your pretty face, no sunglasses, no beer in your hand and definitely no other people. Its a document that represents you, after all.Even though the quote One picture is worth a thousand words is overused, it doesnt make it less accurate. So choose wisely what picture you stick on your profile to impress the right person.2. Honesty saves everyones timeFrom what Ive read online so far, its clear that most people on Tinder lie about some things, or dont mention the whole truth. Lying on a resume is not unusual either. Career experts share that the top lie on applicants resumes is a stretched date of employment. A recent study by GlobalWebIndex showed that 42% of Tinder users who state they are single, are actually in a relationship. In any case, remember your grandmas words better to be slapped with the truth than kissed with a lieAlso, you will get caught, whether its on the first or second date, or on your interview.Whether youre drafting your short bio for Tinde r or a whole resume, keep these 3 points in mindBe honest, it will pay off Honesty will help you stay confident. It will save you time and energy as you wont have to think of new stories proving the points you stated. On my interview at , I said that Im not good with Digital Marketing at all, but Id love to learn. They were impressed with my honesty and it was one of the reasons I was hiredShow your personality. Your personality is one of the main factors that differentiates you from others. Show who you are and make the person on the other end say I must meet this one.Dont exaggerate. Another lie appearing on resumes is inflating skills and past accomplishments. On Tinder, its exaggerating the willingness to commit for example. You match with that cute girl but she says right at the start that shes looking for a serious relationship. What do you do? Well, anything to get the date, duh Some of my friends using Tinder say that its not bad to exaggerate a little bit. Make sure, though , that its not as plain as a day that youre doing it.Related articles7 Mistakes That Are Common In College Students Resumes and How to Fix Them6 powerful women to inspire your next career moveInfographic 8 Tips From Your Dog On Starting A Career3. The first chat could be a deal breakerAfter you matched with your possible husband/wife to be, the first chat comes on the scene. Now you have to be careful with what you say so you dont scare them off By looking into an Instagram account called Tinder Nightmares I realised people do have a problem with pick up lines. You can have a look at examples that will not work. When approaching your employer to be, its the same. The first email could mean that youre the right match. What you write in your Cover Letter will determine whether you will be called up for an interview. In both cases, the first contact is the key it can make or break your deal for getting a date/an interview.4. Mutual friends can boost your chancesIf youve used Tinder befo re, you know that having mutual friends could be a good thing. It is a good way of starting the conversation. Apparently, the usual Heeey ) means youre weird or boring nowadays. Also, having someone in common is a validation the other is not a dork, and you can have a basic trust in their intentions. Unless they are the friends you dont like anymore. Then you probably shouldnt swipe rightSo it goes for the hiring manager. If you know someone, who knows someone who works for the company youre dying to work for, let them know Connect with them, send them an email and let them help you. It could secure your first step to getting your resume reviewed or even called up for an interview.5. Swiping right and swiping left. All day longBefore writing this article, I sat down with my colleague whos used Tinder before. We went through the whole process together and the best part was the swiping I could sit there for hours just swiping and deciding who Id go for a date with. I guess for a new u ser like me its fun. But how about Alex, Pete or Monica whove been on Tinder for 2 years now and dont seem to right-swipe the ONE?Imagine the job of a hiring manager. They sit at their office and go through hundreds of resumes on a daily basis. Their job is to secure the perfect candidate for the company. The ones that are suitable go on one side, the ones that are a No-No to the other. Its just like Tinder, dont you think?6. Before you swipe right, stalk themOn Tinder, before you swipe right you should check the person up. See their pictures, their short bio and if you like them enough, you might even check their other social media profiles. Before comparing your pictures and imagining your kids, would you two make a good pair? When job hunting, you need to do the same. Check the company youd like to work for, their about page, the people that work there, the latest campaigns or newest products theyve been working on. Stalk them on social media. Do you think you two would be a good match? If so, then it is time for you to approach them. Preferably, with a compelling resume created on the platform. ??How about the drehort? On Tinder, users choose to approach people who live fairly close to them so they would avoid traveling too far when picking them up for a date. Its the same with choosing the company to work for. Living right next to your employer holds so many benefits Longer sleep, run over to feed your cat or pick up a delivery.Whether its job search or a love-hunt on Tinder youre focusing on at the moment, remember It needs to be a match before the magic happens If you found yourself in any of these points, hit a share button.Happy Valentines day from the team 3

If you have a beard, this is what your coworkers probably think about you
If you have a beard, this is what your coworkers probably think about you If you have a beard, this is what your coworkers probably think about you âA man with a beard was always a little suspect anyway.â ? John Steinbeck, Cannery RowThough a few years ago, the trend forecasters said beards were on their way out they seemed to be very much wrong as there is a good chance that many of your male coworkers are sporting one and there is a high percentage it is a long, bushy one. However, men may want to rethink their attempt to look like Brad Pitt in that segment of Legends of the Fall where he is really depressed and broody because beards send some interesting messages to people.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!In this monthâs issue of Psychological Science, a group of Australian researchers had 227 participants look at a series of photos of peopleâs faces and they were asked to quickly decide whether the faces conveyed anger or happiness. There were four types of photos (but all used the same men): clean-shav en men displaying happiness, clean-shaven men displaying anger, bearded men displaying happiness, and bearded men displaying anger. A beard here was defined as eight weeks of untrimmed facial hair growth.âThe beard is arguably one of the most obvious signals of masculinity in humans. Almost 150 years ago, Darwin suggested that beards evolved to communicate formidability to other males, but no studies have investigated whether beards enhance recognition of threatening expressions, such as anger,â the authors wrote. The findingsThe participants were the quickest when it came to identifying angry bearded men indicating that beards can make a face seem angrier. They also tended to recognize clean-shaven faces as happier at a fast rate as well.To make sure the participants werenât just biased against bearded faces they swapped the angry beard man photos for sad beard man photos, but they found that they were slower to recognize sad expressions on bearded faces than on clean-shaven f aces so they could rule out a general bias. Then they ran another experiment in which they had 450 participants look and rate the four types of faces used in the first experiment on scales of aggressiveness, masculinity, and prosociality. This time the bearded faces were rated highly for aggressiveness and masculinity but they were also rated highly for being prosocial (defined as a social behavior that âbenefit[s] other people or society as a wholeâ, âsuch as helping, sharing, donating, co-operating, and volunteeringâ) more so than clean-shaven faces.Basically, it means that beards may convey a few messages depending on the facial expression They can come off as aggressive and masculine and angry but they can also be seen as helpful and kind when a smile is applied.Beards in the romance departmentAnother study from 2017, that asked the opinions of 8,520 women when it came to facial hair on men and potential romantic partner interest, found that men with more facial hair w ere favored when it came to long-term partnership (AKA marriage material.) Apparently, men who shave less show that they can prioritize important things like raising children and fixing things around the house.Barnaby Dixson, a human behavioral ecologist at the University of Queensland and a co-author of the 2017 beard length study, told The New York Times that both men and women tend to think men with beards as more masculine, generous, sincere, industrious and self-confident. But along with that beard conveying being a good provider, they can still also be seen as aggressive, he noted.Beards are full of germs? If you are deciding whether or not to grow a beard you should also consider this recent study that found that menâs beards carry more germs than dogs. The study by Switzerlandâs Hirslanded Clinic looked at the beards of 18 men and the necks of 30 dogs. The report revealed that almost 50% of the beards had germs that are considered dangerous to humans. Plus, all of the me n in the sample had a high microbial account in their facial hair but only 23 of the dogs had these. That is a small study but still. Not even the biggest smile makes up for a beard full of germs.Perhaps the kids were right all along. If you sleep less than 7 hours youre more likely to crash your car
If you sleep less than 7 hours you're more likely to crash your car If you sleep less than 7 hours you're more likely to crash your car You may be awake on your drive to work, but if you have gotten less than seven hours of sleep, you are definitely not alert enough to be driving safely, according to a new study published in SLEEP.Using data from 5,470 crashes in a U.S. Department of Transportation study and interviews with those drivers, the researchers found that a few hours of sleep made all the difference for a crash-free commute. Drivers who reported fewer than four hours of sleep had a 15 times higher chance of getting involved or being responsible for a car crash, compared with drivers who slept at least seven hours.Sleep-deprived drivers can be 15 times more likely to be in crashWhen you have not gotten enough sleep, you cannot think straight. It does not take much to get to a dangerous state of mind. One study found that if a participant got 10 days of six-hour sleep, they were acting as if they were totally sleep deprived. When you reach that level of sleeplessness, you act legally drunk, becoming slower t o respond and more prone to dozing off.People who got four to six hours of sleep in the SLEEP study were making more driving errors that led to car crashes. Changes in work schedules and driving for longer than three hours also led to a higher risk. Too many of us are at risk. As more jobs moved farther from population centers, more of us are becoming extreme commuters who travel a minimum of two hours each way to go to work. Itâs why commuting can make or break a job offer. Before worrying about how your workday is going to go, first, worry about how you are going to get there. If you are sleep-deprived, you may be the biggest danger on the road.

New IAM3D Challenge Introduces University Students to 3D Design and Printing Skills
New IAM3D Challenge Introduces University Students to 3D Design and Printing Skills New IAM3D Challenge Introduces University Students to 3D Design and Printing Skills IAM3D Challenge Introduces University Students to 3D Design and Printing Skills ASME has launched a competition, the ASME Innovative Additive Manufacturing 3D (IAM3D) Challenge, which is intended to help provide undergraduate engineering students with the 3D design and printing skills they'll need when they enter the workforce, while competing for $10,000 in prizes. To take part in the competition, which is open to mechanical and multi-disciplinary engineering undergraduate students around the world, students are asked to either re-engineer existing products or create new designs that minimize energy consumption or improve energy efficiency. A panel of judges will evaluate the student teams on how their designs demonstrate ingenuity, the application of sound engineering design principles, and the leveraging of additive manufacturing technology to address a broad spectrum of industrial, manufacturing, and humanitarian challenges. Working prototypes of the top 30 designs will be printed to their submitted design specifications and the students who designed them will be invited to the ASME 2014 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition in Montreal, Canada, where they will present their designs and business case to the judging panel. The Challenge's 30 semi-finalists will be announced by Aug. 31. A $2,000 top prize will be awarded in five categories: best overall design; best innovation; best re-engineered/multi-disciplinary, collaboratively designed product; best freshman design; and best verbal presentation. Other prizes include $5,000 honoraria for team faculty member advisors and travel subsidies for semi-finalists to attend the final round of the contest at the 2014 Congress. Individual students or teams of up to three students are invited to register for the IAM3D Challenge, at http://go.asme.org/IAM3D, until May 1, 2014. Each team must have a faculty member advisor recommend its project. There is no limit to the number of entries per university, however. Guidelines for Standard Business Lunch Tipping
Guidelines for Standard Business Lunch Tipping Guidelines for Standard Business Lunch Tipping Tipping is often considered a personal choice that is done in private to reward good service. However, if you are picking up the tab for a business meal with a customer or client, tipping should not be considered optional- even if the service was not good. The following are general tipping guidelines to help you tip an appropriate amount to reward service, but if you are going to err on tipping, be sure to err on the generous side and not the cheap side. If you are traveling, you might also want to do a little research in advance as tipping guidelines do vary between countries and sometimes even between geographic areas in the U.S. especially within certain major cities like New York (where you may also need to tip doormen.) Standard Amounts to Tip Bar Tenders: $1.00 per drink or 15-20% of your pre-tax bill. Buffet Wait Staff: It is not always necessary or appropriate to tip wait staff serving from a buffet, however, if you do, the standard tip is 10%. Host: It is not required that you tip hosts or others that greet and seat you. If you regularly visit a restaurant (especially those that are higher priced or harder to get seating), you can tip your host $10 to $20 on occasion. Pizza and Other Food Delivery Drivers: If you are having pizza (or other food) delivered to your home or office, the tip rules vary considerably. As in the case of a sit-down restaurant, tipping is optional, but some restaurants add a delivery fee to your bill (usually about $3.00) (delivery fees may be slightly higher when food is delivered to an office). For delivery orders of $20.00 or less, it is customary to offer a minimum tip of $3.00. For any amount over $20.00 tip 10-15% but never less than $5.00. Restroom Attendants: Depending on the services offered the customary tip is $0.50-$3.00. Since your client or co-workers are unlikely to follow you into the restroom, let your conscience guide how much you should tip. Like wait-staff in restaurants, restroom attendants may rely on your tips for income. It would be considered rude not to at least offer the minimum suggested tip of $0.50. Sit-Down Wait Service: 15-20% for good service. Wait staff are often paid less than the standard minimum wage and rely on tips for income. Tipping waiters and waitresses is optional, but not tipping is usually perceived as being âcheap.â If you are with a client or other business professional where ones image is important, no matter how bad the service, leaving a small tip is better than not tipping at all. Take-Out and Curb-Side Staff: Many restaurants offer phone-in ordering and curbside (or inside) pick-up. Tipping is not required. But if you want to tip for receiving special or extraordinary service, the general guideline is up to 10% of the pre-tax bill. Tip Jars: You should not feel obligated to chunk your change into a tip jar and certainly not more than a dollar. Tip jars are nothing more than counter-top pandering. The haul is usually divided among co-workers who do not rely on tips (like wait staff do) for income and even shared with employees who did not provide you with any direct counter service. If you want to tip one employee, in particular, give the tip to them directly â" not the tip jar. Valet Parking Services: The standard tip for valet parking is $2.00-$5.00 when your car is brought to you. Final Tips on Tipping: Never try to impress your business associates and clients by making a show of tipping. Do not draw attention to your tip but do be aware that the person you are with may be watching to see if you tip and how much!

TV Consultants Bring Success to Television Stations
TV Consultants Bring Success to Television Stations TV Consultants Bring Success to Television Stations A TV consultant will never have her face or name on the nightly news broadcast. But this expert, who is hired to work behind the scenes, can be credited with transforming a television stations newscast into a program that is successful, delivering higher ratings and more profits, by having a keen sense of knowing what an audience wants to see. A TV Consultant Is a Market Research Expert Its not common to think of market research and a television newscast being connected. Thats because many people would think a TV newscast simply reports about what happened in a community, while market research is something a company would conduct before launching a new line of cars, cereal or cosmetics. But a TV consultant can look beyond the array of house fires, murders and court cases that make up a typical newscast to find out what an audience wants from a news program. Thats an advantage a TV consultant has by being hired from outside the company she has a distance from the news product so she can more easily ask questions to find out if its reaching its target audience. If a station wants to reach more women in the 25-54 age demographic, a TV consultant might suggest shortening the nightly sportscast to add more health news. A viewer at home might not even realize a subtle change has been made in content, but the station might find that its Nielsen ratings are reflecting the shift by drawing more female viewers, which can be used to sell TV advertisements to them. A TV Consultant Knows How to Use Focus Groups An important part of conducting TV market research is holding focus groups. These are small groups of viewers who are gathered to be asked specific questions about their attitudes toward a citys TV newscasts in general and about the client station in particular. About 15-20 viewers are chosen based on gender, race, age and possibly income. Typically, a TV consultant will conduct a meeting with them while the TV stations management watches behind a one-way glass so that they cant be seen. Questions are usually asked to find out how a client station is viewed in the market. A TV consultant might ask in a focus group, Which station has the best newscast and why? or Do you know which station says it has the most advanced Doppler radar? If a station spent $1 million on a radar system and the viewers say in a focus group that a competing station has a better weathercast, it signals to management that theres a problem, either with the promotion of the radar or possibly with the stations weather team. Focus groups can be asked detailed questions about a TV stations on-air news team. Thats why anchors and reporters are rarely invited to witness a focus group discussion and may not even be aware that one has taken place. If viewers suddenly see a longtime anchor get dumped, especially to make room to hire an anchor from a competitor, that could be a signal that focus groups preferred the competitors on-air talent. A TV Consultant Helps a News Team Fine-Tune Its Newscast While a TV consultants work in conducting market research and focus groups is usually kept secret from most people in a TV stations newsroom, she is still a familiar presence. Thats because a TV consultants contract usually includes working with anchors, reporters, and producers on ways to make the newscast more appealing. For those on-air, a TV consultant provides clothing, hair and makeup tips. In addition, its common for a consultant to coach the anchors on vocal delivery, ad-lib skills, posture, and pacing. Reporters are given ways of delivering better live reports and how to ask better questions during interviews. News producers and writers arent forgotten. They are given exercises in how to write stories that are easier for the viewers to understand, that arent filled with journalese and take advantage of the compelling news video that the videographers record each day. A TV consultants work is never finished. In many DMAs, each of the major stations has its own consultant doing the same research and suggesting the same strategies on how to increase the audience. A handful of TV consultant firms control the vast majority of business at stations across the country. Thats one reason why a station that uses Coverage You Can Count On as its slogan as it becomes the top-rated station in its DMA will be copied by countless others which adopt the same motto and marketing plan. Even so, a TV consultant is one of the most important people in a TV newsroom, even if shes never on the payroll.

How Chatbots Can Create Lifelike Recruiting Conversations
How Chatbots Can Create Lifelike Recruiting Conversations How Chatbots Can Create Lifelike Recruiting Conversations Chatbots have become a hot topic of conversation. These days, they can help you do everything from ordering double decker tacos to finding your soulmate. Chatbots have grown so popular, in fact, that Gartner predicts that, by 2020, the average person will have more conversations with bots than with their spouse. Now thats a notable prophecy! What about the recruiting space? Do bots have the potential to change the dynamic between candidate and recruiter, too? For the most part, bots have been introduced to recruiting primarily as a way to enhance messaging and communication among team members, particularly relating to the status of candidates in the recruitment funnel. Several applicant tracking systems have recently incorporated chatbots as a more streamlined method for sharing updates to a group of new applicants or updating teams about new applications. While these collaborative enhancements are helpful, they dont really allow for true engagement with the candidate, nor do they facilitate natural conversations that further the candidates progression through the hiring process. To take chatbots to the next level of interactivity and effectiveness, it is necessary to supplement current functionality with technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language processing. By introducing these enhanced capabilities to a recruiting chatbot, we can enable more lifelike, intelligent conversations, and chatbots can deliver spontaneous responses to candidates no matter what they ask or how they ask it. The benefit of using a recruiting-specific chatbot is that it doesnt have to be programmed to respond to an almost infinite number of questions and answers like in the cases of Alexa, Siri, and Google Home. Instead, for the vertical market of talent acquisition, the AI and natural language processing will revolve solely around conversational content that relates to questions a candidate might pose during the recruitment period. For instance, a recruiting chatbot might be able to reach out to a candidate to ask about their interest in a particular job and answer initial follow-up questions from the candidate, such as anticipated job responsibilities and education requirements. Imagine the potential cost savings resulting from this type of solution, not to mention the amount of time that would be freed up for recruiters to engage in more strategic activities. In case you think these capabilities exist solely in the realm of sci-fi books, allow me to share our experience here at Crowded, a sourcing and engagement platform for tech jobs in the New York metro area. We recently introduced a recruiting chatbot that narrows the scope of usage even further so that we can refine the bots ability to engage in high-level, realistic conversations with candidates. Specifically, we have focused our chatbot on the software developer market. Why focus first on recruitment of software developers? There are a number of reasons, one being their propensity for early adoption of novel technologies. In addition, weve also determined that the most successful launches of chatbots have been those with highly specific use cases, such as Poncho for customizable weather forecasts or 1-800-Flowers for ordering a bouquet. By solving for the challenges that recruiters face with software developers specifically, we can master the conversational nuances particular to those types of roles. Ultimately, the bots capabilities will expand into additional verticals and markets, but for now, we are busy helping software developers find their next job without going through the hassle of filling out cumbersome, time-consuming online job applications. Our chatbot reaches out to candidates to walk them through the few steps necessary to build a Crowded profile. By engaging in a conversation rather than requiring the completion of an onerous web form, the chatbot delivers a more constructive and positive candidate experience and sets the stage for the candidate and hiring manager to connect on next steps via text message, Facebook Messenger, or email. The results of our bots interactions have been encouraging. Response rates are 6-8 times better than with traditional recruitment channels like InMails or phone calls. Whats more, since engaging in thousands of conversations with tech candidates, our bot has become conversant on topics that are important to developers. We also have developed an escape hatch to ensure that candidates dont become frustrated with the bot or start to have negative experiences. In cases where the bot may not understand a candidates comment or cant answer a specific question, the conversation can be escalated to a human being in our office who can take over the conversation seamlessly. As a result, the candidate continues to be engaged in a natural dialogue, and potential frustration points are avoided. Regardless of the market, the possibilities and applications for bots are endless. Well continue to test and analyze the conversations the chatbot undertakes. Doing so ensures we can use the best of machine learning capabilities to refine and improve the free-form nature of the candidate experience. Howard Schwartz is the CEO and cofounder of Crowded.
