6 things Tinder and job hunting have in common
6 things Tinder and job hunting have in common6 things Tinder and job hunting have in commonDoes Valentines day make you think of love or meeting The Right One? In the past, people used to meet in partie and have a lot of conversations before jumping into a relationship. Nowadays, there are tons of ways to meet people online. The face expressions were replaced with emojis and it takes no more than 3 online chats to become a couple.Ive never tried using Tinder, I perceive it as the Voldemort of the app store, casting spells over all the loners seeking love. Yet Ive always felt tempted to try it out. Id create a profile that would showcase my personality in the best possible light. I imagine Id throw a few lies here and there Im always in a good mood or something. The profile picture would be a cute selfie with a Mayfair filter, to hide all the imperfections nobody needs to know about. Id add other pictures, the ones that received the most likes on Facebook, to pretend that I always lo ok somewhat decent. Then just wait until the right-swipes start rolling in.Working in a company thats helping people with job hunting, I realized Tinder and job search have quite a lot in common After talking to my colleagues who used Tinder before, I outlined these 6 commonalities. A perfect Tinder profile can get you a new love, a great resume can get you a job you love1. One pictures worth a thousand wordsTheres a perfect photo for each situation and you should be aware of that context when creating both your resume and your Tinder profile. Im notlage trying to say that a selfie revealing your cleavage or your perfect abs are going to get you that job It might get you loads of right-swaps and Youre cute messages, but your employer might see it differently. On Tinder, its OK to use filters and pictures from travels with your friends just so you look like youre amazing to hang out with and you have friends. To leave a good impression on the hiring manager, your picture should be a clean headshot. Only your pretty face, no sunglasses, no beer in your hand and definitely no other people. Its a document that represents you, after all.Even though the quote One picture is worth a thousand words is overused, it doesnt make it less accurate. So choose wisely what picture you stick on your profile to impress the right person.2. Honesty saves everyones timeFrom what Ive read online so far, its clear that most people on Tinder lie about some things, or dont mention the whole truth. Lying on a resume is not unusual either. Career experts share that the top lie on applicants resumes is a stretched date of employment. A recent study by GlobalWebIndex showed that 42% of Tinder users who state they are single, are actually in a relationship. In any case, remember your grandmas words better to be slapped with the truth than kissed with a lieAlso, you will get caught, whether its on the first or second date, or on your interview.Whether youre drafting your short bio for Tinde r or a whole resume, keep these 3 points in mindBe honest, it will pay off Honesty will help you stay confident. It will save you time and energy as you wont have to think of new stories proving the points you stated. On my interview at , I said that Im not good with Digital Marketing at all, but Id love to learn. They were impressed with my honesty and it was one of the reasons I was hiredShow your personality. Your personality is one of the main factors that differentiates you from others. Show who you are and make the person on the other end say I must meet this one.Dont exaggerate. Another lie appearing on resumes is inflating skills and past accomplishments. On Tinder, its exaggerating the willingness to commit for example. You match with that cute girl but she says right at the start that shes looking for a serious relationship. What do you do? Well, anything to get the date, duh Some of my friends using Tinder say that its not bad to exaggerate a little bit. Make sure, though , that its not as plain as a day that youre doing it.Related articles7 Mistakes That Are Common In College Students Resumes and How to Fix Them6 powerful women to inspire your next career moveInfographic 8 Tips From Your Dog On Starting A Career3. The first chat could be a deal breakerAfter you matched with your possible husband/wife to be, the first chat comes on the scene. Now you have to be careful with what you say so you dont scare them off By looking into an Instagram account called Tinder Nightmares I realised people do have a problem with pick up lines. You can have a look at examples that will not work. When approaching your employer to be, its the same. The first email could mean that youre the right match. What you write in your Cover Letter will determine whether you will be called up for an interview. In both cases, the first contact is the key it can make or break your deal for getting a date/an interview.4. Mutual friends can boost your chancesIf youve used Tinder befo re, you know that having mutual friends could be a good thing. It is a good way of starting the conversation. Apparently, the usual Heeey ) means youre weird or boring nowadays. Also, having someone in common is a validation the other is not a dork, and you can have a basic trust in their intentions. Unless they are the friends you dont like anymore. Then you probably shouldnt swipe rightSo it goes for the hiring manager. If you know someone, who knows someone who works for the company youre dying to work for, let them know Connect with them, send them an email and let them help you. It could secure your first step to getting your resume reviewed or even called up for an interview.5. Swiping right and swiping left. All day longBefore writing this article, I sat down with my colleague whos used Tinder before. We went through the whole process together and the best part was the swiping I could sit there for hours just swiping and deciding who Id go for a date with. I guess for a new u ser like me its fun. But how about Alex, Pete or Monica whove been on Tinder for 2 years now and dont seem to right-swipe the ONE?Imagine the job of a hiring manager. They sit at their office and go through hundreds of resumes on a daily basis. Their job is to secure the perfect candidate for the company. The ones that are suitable go on one side, the ones that are a No-No to the other. Its just like Tinder, dont you think?6. Before you swipe right, stalk themOn Tinder, before you swipe right you should check the person up. See their pictures, their short bio and if you like them enough, you might even check their other social media profiles. Before comparing your pictures and imagining your kids, would you two make a good pair? When job hunting, you need to do the same. Check the company youd like to work for, their about page, the people that work there, the latest campaigns or newest products theyve been working on. Stalk them on social media. Do you think you two would be a good match? If so, then it is time for you to approach them. Preferably, with a compelling resume created on the platform. ??How about the drehort? On Tinder, users choose to approach people who live fairly close to them so they would avoid traveling too far when picking them up for a date. Its the same with choosing the company to work for. Living right next to your employer holds so many benefits Longer sleep, run over to feed your cat or pick up a delivery.Whether its job search or a love-hunt on Tinder youre focusing on at the moment, remember It needs to be a match before the magic happens If you found yourself in any of these points, hit a share button.Happy Valentines day from the team 3

Still, even when it seems youre doing everything right - youre never late to work, rarely take a sick day, and always meet deadlines - promotions can be few and far between.Youre putting the work in, so why arent you getting rewarded? The answer is simple you dont get promoted for fulfilling your babos expectations.Your bosss expectations are the price of entry. Even if youre making a great effort and doing all thats asked of you, you wont stand out. Youll be seen as someone who completes the minimum requirements, and no one who builds a great career is seen this way.The trick to advancing your career and getting paid mora is to add value by making certain your contributions are worth mora than youre paid. You want to go above and beyond so that youre seen as someone highly valuable- someone the organization cant live without. You should aim to exceed your bosss expect ations so much that he feels likehesthe smartest guy in the world for hiringyou. This isnt as hard as it sounds. In fact, you can blow your bosss mind and make it clear that youre ready for a raise in seven easy steps.1. Beyond developing the skills you need for your job, learn about your companys industry, competitors, latest developments, and challengesProfessional development is important, but why stop there? If you really want to blow your bosss mind, soak up everything you can about your company and your industry. For example, if youre an IT developer, instead of simply learning the current best practices in coding, learn how those practices are being applied throughout your industry.Transferring your knowledge to the real-world context of your organization is a great way to add value. On top of knowing how to do your job, it shows that you know why youre doing it and why it matters.2. Instead of always having the answer, pre-empt the questionIts a good feeling when you can answ er your bosss questions on the spot, without shuffling through piles of paper or telling her that youll have to get back to her.But if you really want to blow her mind, pre-empt the question. Youll save the company money and get ahead, and expand your skillset at the same time.5. Instead of doing what youre told, be proactiveAnybody (well, almost anybody) can do what theyre told. To blow your bosss mind, you have to be proactive. If you see a problem, fix it. If you see something that needs doing, do it. Its only kissing up if you do it manipulatively or with the intention of making your co-workers look bad. Theres absolutely nothing wrong with owning your accomplishments.6. Build relationships with other departmentsIts practically guaranteed that, at some point, your department will need help or input from another area. An excellent way to blow your bosss mind is to build relationships throughout the company. If you have a beard, this is what your coworkers probably think about you
If you have a beard, this is what your coworkers probably think about you If you have a beard, this is what your coworkers probably think about you âA man with a beard was always a little suspect anyway.â ? John Steinbeck, Cannery RowThough a few years ago, the trend forecasters said beards were on their way out they seemed to be very much wrong as there is a good chance that many of your male coworkers are sporting one and there is a high percentage it is a long, bushy one. However, men may want to rethink their attempt to look like Brad Pitt in that segment of Legends of the Fall where he is really depressed and broody because beards send some interesting messages to people.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!In this monthâs issue of Psychological Science, a group of Australian researchers had 227 participants look at a series of photos of peopleâs faces and they were asked to quickly decide whether the faces conveyed anger or happiness. There were four types of photos (but all used the same men): clean-shav en men displaying happiness, clean-shaven men displaying anger, bearded men displaying happiness, and bearded men displaying anger. A beard here was defined as eight weeks of untrimmed facial hair growth.âThe beard is arguably one of the most obvious signals of masculinity in humans. Almost 150 years ago, Darwin suggested that beards evolved to communicate formidability to other males, but no studies have investigated whether beards enhance recognition of threatening expressions, such as anger,â the authors wrote. The findingsThe participants were the quickest when it came to identifying angry bearded men indicating that beards can make a face seem angrier. They also tended to recognize clean-shaven faces as happier at a fast rate as well.To make sure the participants werenât just biased against bearded faces they swapped the angry beard man photos for sad beard man photos, but they found that they were slower to recognize sad expressions on bearded faces than on clean-shaven f aces so they could rule out a general bias. Then they ran another experiment in which they had 450 participants look and rate the four types of faces used in the first experiment on scales of aggressiveness, masculinity, and prosociality. This time the bearded faces were rated highly for aggressiveness and masculinity but they were also rated highly for being prosocial (defined as a social behavior that âbenefit[s] other people or society as a wholeâ, âsuch as helping, sharing, donating, co-operating, and volunteeringâ) more so than clean-shaven faces.Basically, it means that beards may convey a few messages depending on the facial expression They can come off as aggressive and masculine and angry but they can also be seen as helpful and kind when a smile is applied.Beards in the romance departmentAnother study from 2017, that asked the opinions of 8,520 women when it came to facial hair on men and potential romantic partner interest, found that men with more facial hair w ere favored when it came to long-term partnership (AKA marriage material.) Apparently, men who shave less show that they can prioritize important things like raising children and fixing things around the house.Barnaby Dixson, a human behavioral ecologist at the University of Queensland and a co-author of the 2017 beard length study, told The New York Times that both men and women tend to think men with beards as more masculine, generous, sincere, industrious and self-confident. But along with that beard conveying being a good provider, they can still also be seen as aggressive, he noted.Beards are full of germs? If you are deciding whether or not to grow a beard you should also consider this recent study that found that menâs beards carry more germs than dogs. The study by Switzerlandâs Hirslanded Clinic looked at the beards of 18 men and the necks of 30 dogs. The report revealed that almost 50% of the beards had germs that are considered dangerous to humans. Plus, all of the me n in the sample had a high microbial account in their facial hair but only 23 of the dogs had these. That is a small study but still. Not even the biggest smile makes up for a beard full of germs.Perhaps the kids were right all along. If you sleep less than 7 hours youre more likely to crash your car
If you sleep less than 7 hours you're more likely to crash your car If you sleep less than 7 hours you're more likely to crash your car You may be awake on your drive to work, but if you have gotten less than seven hours of sleep, you are definitely not alert enough to be driving safely, according to a new study published in SLEEP.Using data from 5,470 crashes in a U.S. Department of Transportation study and interviews with those drivers, the researchers found that a few hours of sleep made all the difference for a crash-free commute. Drivers who reported fewer than four hours of sleep had a 15 times higher chance of getting involved or being responsible for a car crash, compared with drivers who slept at least seven hours.Sleep-deprived drivers can be 15 times more likely to be in crashWhen you have not gotten enough sleep, you cannot think straight. It does not take much to get to a dangerous state of mind. One study found that if a participant got 10 days of six-hour sleep, they were acting as if they were totally sleep deprived. When you reach that level of sleeplessness, you act legally drunk, becoming slower t o respond and more prone to dozing off.People who got four to six hours of sleep in the SLEEP study were making more driving errors that led to car crashes. Changes in work schedules and driving for longer than three hours also led to a higher risk. Too many of us are at risk. As more jobs moved farther from population centers, more of us are becoming extreme commuters who travel a minimum of two hours each way to go to work. Itâs why commuting can make or break a job offer. Before worrying about how your workday is going to go, first, worry about how you are going to get there. If you are sleep-deprived, you may be the biggest danger on the road.

New IAM3D Challenge Introduces University Students to 3D Design and Printing Skills
New IAM3D Challenge Introduces University Students to 3D Design and Printing Skills New IAM3D Challenge Introduces University Students to 3D Design and Printing Skills IAM3D Challenge Introduces University Students to 3D Design and Printing Skills ASME has launched a competition, the ASME Innovative Additive Manufacturing 3D (IAM3D) Challenge, which is intended to help provide undergraduate engineering students with the 3D design and printing skills they'll need when they enter the workforce, while competing for $10,000 in prizes. To take part in the competition, which is open to mechanical and multi-disciplinary engineering undergraduate students around the world, students are asked to either re-engineer existing products or create new designs that minimize energy consumption or improve energy efficiency. A panel of judges will evaluate the student teams on how their designs demonstrate ingenuity, the application of sound engineering design principles, and the leveraging of additive manufacturing technology to address a broad spectrum of industrial, manufacturing, and humanitarian challenges. Working prototypes of the top 30 designs will be printed to their submitted design specifications and the students who designed them will be invited to the ASME 2014 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition in Montreal, Canada, where they will present their designs and business case to the judging panel. The Challenge's 30 semi-finalists will be announced by Aug. 31. A $2,000 top prize will be awarded in five categories: best overall design; best innovation; best re-engineered/multi-disciplinary, collaboratively designed product; best freshman design; and best verbal presentation. Other prizes include $5,000 honoraria for team faculty member advisors and travel subsidies for semi-finalists to attend the final round of the contest at the 2014 Congress. Individual students or teams of up to three students are invited to register for the IAM3D Challenge, at http://go.asme.org/IAM3D, until May 1, 2014. Each team must have a faculty member advisor recommend its project. There is no limit to the number of entries per university, however. For more information on the ASME Innovative Additive Manufacturing 3D Challenge, visit http://go.asme.org/IAM3D.
